Zetech Sparks have recruited national under-20 midfielder Maureen Anyango and eye four more signings for the 2022-23 season, coach Benard Kitolo has said.

The students who finished fifth last season with 36 points are expected to resume training next week. Anyango was signed from Kibera-based division one side Uweza club.

Kitolo wants a junior striker to shoulder the goal-scoring burden with the seasoned Puren Alekwe, who was runner-up last season in the goal-scoring charts after finding the back of the net 16 times.

The tough-talking tactician also requires reinforcement in defence after shipping in 38 goals in 22 matches while a backup goalkeeper tops the agenda too.

"Anyango is a talented all-rounded player with the ability to further improve. She brings energy, athleticism and creativity required to thrive in the cut-throat league," Kitolo highlighted.

"We require competition in midfield and this will enable players to get out of their comfort zone. We suffered a lot when Alekwe was missing so we have to be prepared. We want to put the players through their paces as we step up training. We will have an open training session on Wednesday next week and whoever meets our cut will be selected."

Sparks enjoyed a seven-game unbeaten run in the second leg last season. This is after beefing up their squad with the right players for Kitolo's high-pressing style in the mid-season transfer window.

"So far so good. We haven't lost any players and we don't intend to lose any. The squad is promising  and will be even better this time."

Meanwhile, Kitolo challenged women footballers to combine both sports and academics and urged them to grab the opportunity at Zetech  University.

"The life span of a sportsperson is very short. You need to have an option once you exit the stage and Zetech offers you that platform."
