Kakamega Homeboyz head coach Bernard Mwalala believes they stand a perfect opportunity to run away with their maiden Kenyan Premier League title this season following their recent string of wins against the more fancied sides in the league.

Homeboyz put up a tough battle to pip reigning champions Tusker by a solitary goal in a thrilling encounter at Bukhungu Stadium on Thursday.

Mwalala was, however, quick to caution his charges against complacency, reminding them the battle is still far from over.

“We are happy to have collected another three points against the reigning champs after flooring Gor Mahia in our last fixture. This is a clear indication we are very much in contention for the title. However, we should be careful not to celebrate too soon. We still need to put in more effort in our remaining matches,” said Mwalala.

As Mwalala celebrated his big win, his opposite number Robert Matano chided his squad for sleeping on the job.

“We conceded a little bit too early in the match and failed to make use of some brilliant chances we created. It behooves us to be more clinical in front of goal in our next encounters,” said Matano.

The win, albeit slim, has fired coach Bernard Mwalala's side to the apex of the log where they have taken command with 24 points, three clear of second-placed KCB.

It was Homeboyz's back-to-back win, coming hot on the heels of their contentious victory over record champions Gor Mahia at the same venue last Sunday.

Tusker will rue a glorious opportunity to level terms in the 19th minute when Deogratious Ojok's header from Daniel Sakari's long throw missed the target by a whisker.

Ten minutes later Sakari came on the end of Shami Mwinyi's cross in the six-yard area but failed to make good use of it, the ball hurtling out of the target by inches.

Eager to tilt the scoreline to his side's advantage, Tusker head gaffer Robert Matano effected a triple substitution in minutes after the restart, introducing Humphrey Mieno, Lawrence Luvanda, and Ibrahim Joshua for Daniel Sakari, Wellington Ochieng, and Ojok.

The outcome leaves Tusker n 12th place with 10 points.
