New Ulinzi Starlets captain Diana Shakava wants to emulate departed captain Neddy Atieno, who announced retirement from football last week.

Shakava 24, takes the armband on full-time basis having been Atieno's deputy. The former Eldoret Falcons utility player is looking forward to the challenge she termed as a 'heaven-sent opportunity'.

"I'll be judged on and off the pitch. It is an opportunity for me to hone my leadership skills but at the same time it is a great challenge considering what Atieno has achieved with the team," said the utility.

During her time, Atieno guided Ulinzi to the FKF Women's Cup as well as the Super Cup glory. She was named in the 15-member Football Kenya Federation Caretaker Committee that has taken over the operations at Kandanda House following the disbandment of the Nick Mwendwa-led federation.

"It is an honour and I am ready to take Ulinzi to the next level. Though the gap Atieno has left is massive, our forwards have what it takes to fill the void. I'll seek her advice if need be now that she's part of the technical bench," said Shakava.

Shakava, who previously turned up for Kahawa Queens, said the acquisition of Sheril Angachi makes the soldiers a complete team.

Angachi was signed from Gaspo and is considered Kenya's best midfielder alongside Corazon Acquino. Her energy, ability to read the game and play make in a deep-lying role makes her a secret weapon to Ulinzi, who have their eyes trained on winning the national league title for the first time.

"Angachi will solve a myriad of problems we had last season, especially after some of our players joined recruit training school," said the Bishop Njenga alumnus.

"She brings balance and composure to our midfield. She is a workhorse and good on and off the ball. Her passing range is immense. She can only improve because she has time on her side."
