Hit Squad super heavyweight boxer Elly Ajowi says he is ready to make the country proud again at the Africa Zone 3 Boxing Championship primed for April in Kinshasa, Congo.

The Kenya Police Service officer will be defending the title he won last year in March after upsetting African champion Maxime of Cameroon to strut to the gold podium.

“We've prepared very well for the task ahead and I'm looking forward to another gold,” Ajowi said.

Ajowi and his teammates have been punching furiously on the bag for the last four weeks at the Mathare Depot in Nairobi where the team pitched a non-residential training camp ahead of their trip to Congo.

“The coaches have been keen on refining the tough edges that saw us perform poorly in the past and we are definitely a lot more prepared than ever before,” Ajowi added.

“The morale in the camp is amazing.”

Ajowi is most certainly assured of making the final cut when head coach Benjamin Musa ultimately names his the traveling party.

Musa said he will be thinning out the 26-member squad to a final contingent of 12 male and 10 female boxers.

Ajowi, 38, has previously expressed a desire to retire after the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games slated for July, saying there is a need to create room for a new generation of boxers in the national team.

Ajowi said he would be keen to nurture youths from Dandora where he sharpened his skills in his formative years.

“I believe I have already achieved quite a lot over the duration I've been in the ring and I now want to impart the knowledge I gathered to budding boxers,” he said.
