Mombasa will now host the FIBA Africa Zone Five U-16 Nations Championships for boys and girls in December, regional federations, zonal secretary, Vitalis Gode confirmed.

He said: "Kenya Basketball Federation has been awarded the hosting rights of the event."

He said the December 13-17 show will be held at the Aga Khan Academy Sports hall with teams arriving a day earlier.

The junior championship was earlier programmed for Dar-es-Salaam, Tanzania from August 16-19.

Teams expected to take part in the event are Burundi, Egypt, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, Somalia, Sudan, South Sudan, Tanzania, and Uganda.

KBF secretary Ambrose Kisoi expressed excitement over the latest move to stage the event in Kenya.

"We are ready to have the show in Mombasa. Playing the tournament in the school has an advantage because the youngsters will play and stay in one venue," he said, adding that they will liaise with the Coaches Commission to help out in identifying tacticians who will train the teams.

"We want a pool of about seven tacticians to help out in handling the technical bench.  From there, we will pick the ones to man the benches," he said.

He also confirmed they have registered Kenya Ports Authority as the country's representative in the Africa Basketball League. The draw for the first phase of the BAL is expected this week.

The group phase of the event tips off September 6-30. Successful teams will move on to the second round—the elite 16 that will start from November 22 to December 4.
