National champions Equity Bank and Kenya Ports Authority will represent the country at next month’s FIBA Africa Women Club Championships, Kenya Basketball Federation secretary Ambrose Kisoi has revealed.

Equity and KPA qualified for the continental show in 2019 by finishing first and second in the Premier League respectively. However, their quest for continental glory was halted as the organisers postponed the event due to the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic.

“Equity Bank and KPA have already confirmed participation,” said Kisoi. “There is a likelihood of the event being played in November but we are still waiting for the finer details, including venue and dates.”

The two giants are already destined for another battle for the local title as they sit atop the Premier League table.

The dock women are at the summit with 31 points from 16 games while the bankers are second on 27 points having played two matches less.

They were in action over the weekend with KPA beating Strathmore University Swords and University of Nairobi Dynamites 76-30 and 53-33 respectively.

Equity Bank, on the other hand, survived a scare from Storms before breaking off late to register a 45-37 victory.

Meanwhile, Dynamites coach Juma Kent said he is more than certain of a top four finish.

“If we continue playing like we are, the worst I can finish is fifth,” Kent observed. “We played good basketball in that loss to KPA and what made me more happy is that we contained their centre Medina (Okot).”

The UoN side is fourth with 21 points, one behind Zetech University Sparks. They have played 14 and 13 games respectively.

Kent said he expects to win his last two regular season fixtures against Equity Bank and Zetech.
