Were, Mwangi star in hurdles at Kip Keino Classic

Reigning Africa senior athletics 400m hurdles bronze medalist Wiseman Were and Hannah Mwangi set new records at the Kip Keino Classic, the World Athletics Continental Tour gold at the Karasani Stadium on Saturday.

Were, who defended his title, won the hurdled title in 49.59 beating Kipkorir Rotich (50.37) as a personal best and Edward Ngujiri coming third at 50.70.

Were, who also competed for the country at the world under 20 championships, said that he has had a good season and is ready to run well at the world championships.

“It was a good race now that I have defended my title. Running here and setting a new meeting record was a plus to me,” said Were.

The hurdler added that he will be competing in some races as part of his training for the many races coming ahead.

Mwangi set the new meeting record in the 400m hurdles to secure the title in 57.44 in the national category event.

She says that the victory was good for her as she prepares to represent the country at the World Championships in Budapest, Hungary.

“Running and winning makes me happy. The capacity crowd at Kasarani inspired me to cruise to victory,” said Mwangi.

She set the meeting record ahead of Diana Chebet who was second in 59.40 to set her personal best as Jane Chege completed the podium at 59.97.

Mercy Akech was victorious in the women's 400m, setting her personal best.

The Nairobi-based athlete won the title in 52.42 beating Asimenye Simwaka from Botswana (52.78) as her season best and Mercy Chebet completed the podium at 53.35.
