Racewalker Ikate eyes World Championships slot after finishing third

Ikate clocked 1:47.34 to finish third in the sixth and final Athletics Kenya field and track event at Moi International Stadium, Kasarani.

Racewalker Assumpta Ikate is targeting a World Championships slot after clocking 1:47.15 to finish third in the sixth Athletics Kenya track and field event at the Moi International Stadium, Kasarani.

Ikate, who was debuting in the 20km race, said she feels she has improved a lot but she wants to lower her time.

"It is my first time to compete over 20km. This year I think I have made a lot of progress and I am hopeful I can still lower my time. Training with African champion Emily Ngii has helped me improve a lot. My dream is to qualify for the World championships in Budapest," Ikate said.

The race was won by Emily Ngii who cut the tape in 1:37.34 as Sylvia Kemboi finished second in a time of 1:41.37.

Ngii is the 2019 African Games champion held in Rabat, Morocco. She bagged silver in the 2014 African Athletics Championships. She was part of team Kenya to the 2022 World Athletics Championships in Oregon, United States. 

The three-day event started on Thursday and ends on Saturday.
