Makena, Ochieng shine at Mombasa Athletics Kenya races

Makena won the 10,000m race while Ochieng blasted the field to clinch the 100m title.

Evangeline Makena and Hesbon Ochieng were among the top performers at the Athletics Kenya weekend meeting at the Mbaraki Sports Club, Mombasa.

Makena won the 10,000m race while Ochieng blasted the field to clinch the 100m title.

Makena clocked 36:23.9 to win the low-key 25-lap race ahead of Regina Wambui (37:57.1) and Naomi Jepkirui (41:23.9).

Makena, who started her athletics career as a sprinter, said she has been working hard in shedding weight.

"I'm happy to have won today. This is part of my training as I target a chance to represent my country for the first time (at the World Championships)," said Makena.

It was a photo finish between Ochieng and Justine Isaboke in the men's 100m after both timed timing 10.6. Robinson Otende finished third in 10.7.

Naomi Korir romped to victory in the 800m race. 

She said: "I'm aiming to get an opportunity to compete at the world championships. That's why I am working hard in my training to improve my speed."

Korir emerged the winner in 2:07.5 ahead of Mercy Oketch timed (2:09.2 as Johnson Wanjiru placed third in 2:12.1.

In the  Peninah Wangari ruled the women's 1,500m race in 4:44.7 while Caroline Biwott placed second in 4:47.5. Millicent Nyabare came home in third in 4:54.0 to close the podium.

Athletics Kenya vice president in charge of competitions Paul Mutwii said: "I am happy for the people of Mombasa and I was impressed with the officiating although the turnout was not as good as we expected."
