World 10,000m champion Joshua Cheptegei produced a massive sprint in the last two laps to win his first Olympic gold in the men's 5000m at the Tokyo Olympics. 

The Ugandan timed 12:58.15 ahead of Canadian Mohamed Ahmed (12:58.61) and Kenyan-born American Paul Chelimo (12:59.05) in second and third respectively. 

Kenya's sole representative, Nicholas Kimeli, finished fourth in 12:59.17, having been in the lead for majority of the race before withering in the ultimate lap. 

The country's other representatives in the race, Samuel Chebolei and Daniel Simiu, did not make it past the previous round. 

The last Kenyan to ever win gold in the men's 5000m at the Olympics is John Ngugi at the Seoul Olympics in 1988.
