Barasa to exploit home-ground advantage at KUSF show

Calvin Otieno and Xaviour Sambo are in South Africa with the men's national team for the Africa qualifiers for the 2024 Paris Olympic Games.

Despite losing two key players to the national team, Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology coach Geoffrey Barasa is optimistic about defending their Kenya University Sports Federation Western Conference title over the weekend.

Calvin Otieno and Xaviour Sambo are in South Africa with the men's national team for the Africa qualifiers for the 2024 Paris Olympic Games.

Barasa said even though they would have liked to have Otieno and Sambo over the weekend, they have players eager to step up for the two-day championships to be played at the MMUST grounds.

“As defending champions, I have confidence that we will retain our title. We have prepared well for the event and as the hosts, we have home-ground advantage,” said Barasa.

Nine universities will compete in the various disciplines on show including volleyball (women), hockey (men), basketball (women), and swimming — to be staged at Mudasa School in Vihiga County.

The nine are Kaimosi, Maseno, Kabianga, Rongo, Great Lakes, Kisii, Tom Mboy, Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology (JOOUST), and hosts MMUST.

Barasa, who is the MMUST head of sports said they are hopeful that Kibabii will also grace the event.

In addition to the hockey title, MMUST are also the defending champions in volleyball (women), basketball (men), and swimming (men) as well as the overall swimming title.
