After ruling the girls’ volleyball at the national stage in Kakamega over the weekend Kesongon High School have warned multiple East Africa champions Kwanthanze to expect the same treatment at next week’s regional show in Kigali, Rwanda.

Representing Rift Valley, Kesogon ended Kwanthanze’s three-year dominance with a 3-1 (25-19, 15-25, 25-22, and 25-18) win in the final at the Kakamega High School volleyball court. This was the first win for Kesogon against Kwanthanze in the last three years.

“We came here with the sole purpose of winning the title and we did it in style. We started the match as underdogs but what Kwanthanze did not know is that we were prepared for them,” said head coach Gilbert Kaisha.

He said they took advantage of their underdog’s tag to secure the victory against the favourites.

“As a school, we also want our name to grow in volleyball. With this achievement, we are praying that we meet Kwanthanze again at the finals at the Federation of East and Central Africa Schools Games so that we can beat them again to prove the doubting Thomases wrong,” said Kaisha after the win.

At Bukhungu Stadium, former girls’ football champions Butere proved a point after beating reigning champions Wiyeta Girls 1-O in the final.

Judith Okumu scored the lone goal from the penalty to hand the western region the title against Rift Valley’s representatives. Butere last won the title nine years ago.

Butere beat Madira Girls with the same goal margin in the semis while Edgar Manyara’s Wiyeta romped to a 3-1 win against a stubborn Dagoretti Mixed in post-match penalties to advance to the final.

In the position three play-offs, Madira also from Western were 1-0 winners over Dagoretti Mixed with Walarie Nekesa scoring the solitary goal.

The three teams—Butere, Wiyeta, and Madira—have all qualified to play in girls’ football at the East Africa Games starting next week.

In the boys’ final, multiple champions St. Anthony’s Boys’ Kitale were 2-0 winners over Dagoretti during the finals.
