The masters' tournament in Kisumu this weekend will act as a curtain-raiser for the league that serves off on April 7, according to Kenya Hockey Union (KHU) deputy match and fixtures secretary, Moses Majiwa.

This will be the first series of the third edition with subsequent series scheduled for Nairobi, Mombasa and Nakuru.

"The masters' tournament is a warm-up ahead of the league. We might consider adding another series apart from the aforementioned ones depending on the success of the ones lined up," Majiwa said.

A total of 10 teams are expected to grace the two-day event.

Majiwa, however, is concerned that in the wake of the ongoing demonstrations in the country, the championship might experience a low turn-up of teams.

"Political demonstrations being experienced in the country is a reason of concern because teams from all parts of the country are expected to be in Kisumu for the competition. Some teams might consider giving the competition a wide berth due to insecurity."

The masters league was started in 2019 but took a break in 2020 and 2021 because of the pandemic and the second edition was held last year.
