Kisii county teams are spoiling for a battle ahead of the Nyanza region secondary schools' Term One games scheduled for April 4-8 at Kisii School and Kisii University.

County rugby 15’s champions Kisii School coach Lee Aston said they are keen to retain the title.

“Expect a better performance from us at the regional games. I know St. Mary’s Yala, Maseno School and Homa Bay School will give us a run for our money but I’m confident we shall prevail,” said Aston.

Kisii School beat Nduru Boys 18-0 to lift the Kisii county title on Saturday. Both teams will represent the region.

“Playing at home will give us an added advantage over our rivals. Our defence has been critical in our campaign and it will be key at the regional games,” added Aston.

After winning the boys’ hockey title for the third consecutive time, Nduru Boys coach Faith Jebet said her boys are ripe for the regional title.

“Last year, we lost narrowly to eventual winners Kisumu Day due to inexperience. This is the second time we are going for the regionals and I’m confident the boys will give a good account of themselves,” said Jebet a former hockey player.

She cited Kisumu county Champions Maseno School and multiple regional champions Kisumu Day as their main threat.

Nduru Boys beat Cardinal Otunga High School, Mosocho 1-0 to win the county title. Cardinal Otunga coach Derrick Gichana expects his players to improve at the regionals.

“Expect Cardinal Otunga to be back to the nationals. If not now, in future. We want to reclaim our place,” said Gichana.

Sengera Girls basketball coach Kennedy Wekesa said: “We expect to do better than last year. I have a better team because all the girls can shoot, drive and defend. Reaching the finals is our target.”

Sengera will be joined by Kereri Girls at the regionals. Coach Benerd Midenga said although the girls lack the basics, he is going to focus on that ahead of the regionals.

Kisii School’s basketball coach Gilbert Okumu said he is not afraid of defending champions Onjiko School and former Champions Agoro Sare.

“We are going to the regionals to compete. Nobody gave us a chance at the regionals but we emerged, winners. Our target is to reach the semis or finals,” said Okumu.

Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA) Kisii county chairman, Fred Mogaka said his team will write history as far as the management of sports is concerned. “We want to make a difference and write history in the management of sports,” said Mogaka, the principal of Kisii School.

Kisii county will be represented by two teams in each discipline since they are hosting the regional showpiece, according to the county secretary general, Geoffrey Nyantika.
