Multiple national rally champion Baldev Singh Chager will be first off the ramp at the East African Safari Mini Classic Rally starting on Friday in Nakuru.

After the flag-off in Nakuru, the cars will head for Eldoret and its environs in the North Rift on Saturday and Sunday.

Chager, navigated by Gareth Dawe in a Kabras Sugar Porsche 911, will lead a huge entry list of 32 drivers.

Daykin previously guided Lee Rose to multiple Kenya National Rally Championship and 2008 and 2010 ARC Safari Rally wins.

MMC Bamba Rally 2022 winner Raaji Bharij is back in the saddle. He will be tackling the grueling three-day — 1,000km course in a Ford Escort MK1.

The 1994 WRC Safari Rally winner Ian Duncan is also in the Mini Classic mix in a Datsun 280z.

Newly-crowned 4WD Turbo Class Autocross Champion Eric Bengi is partnering with Gatimu Mindo in a Datsun Violet. He is seeded 16th ahead of compatriot Evans Kavisi in a similar car and Robbie Calder in a Datsun 280z.

The Mini Classic will also feature a Rally Raid competition with the all-South African crew of Jose Sardinha and Glen Castle ready to ruffle feathers in a Mitsubishi Pajero.

EASCR chairman Joey Ghose said preparations for the event are in top gear.

“We have everything in place; the route and marshals, and so much more. We are looking at the weather, and from all indications, looks like it’s going to be a wet event. The Boda Boda community and association will be marshalling the roads and ensuring that there will be non-competing traffic on the roads,” said Ghose.

Eligible Cars for the event are FIA Group 1, 2, 3,4 and Group A and B which are passenger-type motor cars built before December 31, 1985, with not more than six seats.

The Classic Safari Rally Class structure has Class 1 of up to and including 1600cc. Class 2 are cars up to and including 2000cc while Class 3 has cars up to and including 3000cc. Class 4 features cars Over 3000cc.

According to regulations, 4-wheel drive, turbo-chargers, and superchargers are not permitted to participate in the event.

Where a vehicle has been manufactured after December 31, 1985, and is mechanically and bodily identical to those manufactured and consistent with an appropriate FIA homologation prior to this date, its body and the vehicle will be considered eligible to enter the event.

The onus is on the competitor to prove the specification of the vehicle is consistent with these regulations.
