National champions Kenya Prisons will miss the services of five players at the fourth leg of the Kenya Volleyball Federation league slated for Mombasa this weekend.

Emmaculate Chemtai, Joy Luseneka, Sherine Chepkemboi, Lydia Maiyo and Meldine Sande are all unavailable for selection for the three-day competition due to family commitments.

This is a major blow to the Brackcides Agala-captained side since the five have been mainstays for Prisons, who have won the last three editions.

Prisons are bracing themselves for a bruising battle against Kenya Army, Kenya Defence Forces and Kenya Pipeline on Friday, Saturday and Sunday respectively.

"This is what is expected especially when you are managing a ladies' team. They are normal human beings. Family matters is part of their private life so..yeah... there's time for everything," said coach Josp Barasa.

Barasa, who expressed concerns with his bench power, added: "It is a pity they won't be with us considering what we have achieved together in the last few seasons. On the flip side, we have many players who can fill up the roles but our bench won't be strong."

Despite the dilemma, Barasa doesn't expect his charges to relinquish their title, challenging the juniors to rise to the occasion at Kenya Ports Authority's Makande Hall.

Pauline Itoo (opposite), Faith Aite (middle-blocker) and left-attacker Christine Wafula will all be gunning for their first starts at the coast. The former was acquired from Kwanthanze while the latter two were signed from Kesogon Secondary School.

"It is all about focus because their talent is obvious. They have to grab their chance at all coasts. We cannot afford to relinquish our title  as much as we look depleted. The young players need to adapt slowly but we cannot burden them with expectations at this stage," said Barasa.

"We must qualify for the playoffs. It is going to be a tough season  but we must learn to cope with it."
