KCB RFC stunned Kenya Harlequins 14-10 in the quarter-finals of the Floodlit Rugby Tournament on Wednesday night to book a semi-final date with Kenyatta University’s Blak Blad on Saturday. 

KCB forward Nelson Nyandati gave the bankers 8-7 halftime lead before Festus Silasie converted two penalties to seal the much-needed win.

KCB backs coach Mariko Mushilla said: “We expected a tough match against a well-organised and solid team. Quins put their best foot forward and gave us a run for our money.”

“Our boys were not in their best element but we expected it considering that this was our first competitive match before the start of the 2022/2023 Kenya Cup season.”

KCB were forced to change their tactical approach to match their hard-to-break opponents, a strategy that didn’t work prior to the penalties.

Former Shujaa captain Andrew Amonde said: “Today was going to be scrappy because we are trying to incorporate new blood into the team. We are also trying to adapt various systems before the new Kenya Cup season kicks off. Going forward, we expect the team to be sharp to guarantee us maximum points.”

The Floodlit tournament offers build-up matches to various teams that will be participating in the 2022/2023 Kenya Cup season, scheduled to kick off on November 26.
