Nyanza South track and field attracts 200 athletes

Regional chairman Peter Angwenyi said they expect about 200 athletes to take part in the event.

The stage is set for the Nyanza South track and field championships to be staged on Monday at Kisii University.

Regional chairman Peter Angwenyi said they expect about 200 athletes to take part in the event.

He said athletes from Boruma Secondary, Kiendege Secondary, and Keberesi Under-20 training camp will take part in the regional event.

“We want to give the junior athletes exposure early and that is why we have invited them for the regionals. We also expect a host of experienced athletes who are keen to represent Kenya at various championships this year,” said Angwenyi.

Former national secondary schools and youth Olympics bronze medalist Francis Leshoo is among the upcoming athletes who will grace the event.

“My target this season is to represent Kenya at the  Africa Senior Championships and Commonwealth Games. I have been training in Eldoret and I’m ready,” Leshoo said.

Angwenyi said they hope to select about 30 athletes for the Athletics Kenya (AK) national championships to be held from April 28-30 at Moi International Sports Center (MISC),  Kasarani.

“Only athletes who will meet certain selection criteria will be selected,” Angwenyi added.

The nationals will be used to select a team for Senior Africa Athletics Championships to be held in the city of Reduit in Mauritius from May 8 to 15.

At the same time, the Nyanza North championships will be held on Saturday at Moi Stadium in Kisumu, according to regional public relations officer, Jared Gillo.

Junior international sprinter Beatrice Odero is expected to light up the one-day championship.  She will take part in her s 100m and 200m  specialties. 

Odero added that junior athletes who are training at Sangoro High School U-20 camp will also take part in the regional championship.

The athletes are preparing for the World Under-20 Championship trials and are hoping to make it to Team Kenya for World Under-20 Championships to be held in Cali, Colombia in August.
