The Kenyan squad to May's Deaflympic Games in Brazil will from next week begin residential camp training ahead of the opener on May 1 in Caxias do Sul.

Kenya Deaf Sports Federation president Peter Kalae said the residential camps will be at Nyayo and Moi stadia in Nairobi.

"We expect the athletes to enter residential camp training beginning Friday (April 1) either at Nyayo or Moi Stadium, Kasarani. The camps will be for all teams, which have already qualified for Brazil, including basketball (men and women), football, golf, handball as well as athletics," Kalae said.

He added that stringent measures will be taken to minimise the risk of Covid-19 infection and to avoid any last-minute disappointments in their preparations.

"Yes, of course, they will be bubble training camps to protect players and all those within from the risk of infections. We are leaving nothing to chance," he said.

Part of the preparations also involves a series of friendlies for the ball teams.

The basketball and women's football teams qualified for the quadrennial games after their respective opponents at the Deaflympic Ball Games qualifiers failed to show up in Nairobi.

Subsequently, 35 players were also selected to join the residential training camp for the women's football team — who were in September due to play Ghana and Zanzibar in a fight for the ticket to Brazil.

"Friendlies will be a must because they need to test themselves before we depart for the competition. We will mainly play against our local hearing counterparts rather than against other countries," he added.

This development comes close to three weeks after national trials for athletics at Nyayo Stadium during which 70 athletes were selected to fly the country's flag in the May 1-15 global event.

It will be the seventh appearance for the country at the summer Deaflympics following its debut in 1997 in Copenhagen, Denmark.

At the last edition in 2017 in Samsun, Turkey, Kenya returned home with 13 medals, including four gold and four silver as well as five bronze.
