Strathmore Scorpions coach Meshack Senge hopes to build upon their 2-0 win against record champions Blazers as they seek to win their maiden Kenya Hockey Union (KHU) women's Premier League title this season.

Mourine Ongoche opened the scoring for Scorpions barely two minutes into the match amid wild celebrations from their fans.

International player Gilly Okumu sealed the result four minutes before half-time after stealing the ball from Blazers' Terry Juma. This was Scorpions' first win against Blazers in more than a decade.

"The players displayed character and their hunger and desire for a win was unmatched. They played according to instructions," Senge said.

He added: "We will celebrate the big win but again it should not get into our heads. This is only the start but this young team is capable of doing greater things going forward."

The coach feels Scorpions would have won the match by a bigger margin were they more clinical in front of the goal.

Blazers, on the other hand, were lethargic in their display and looked a pale shadow of the team that has dominated the local scene for more than two decades.

Blazers assistant coach Josephine Ataro conceded defeat but promised to work on their weaknesses. Blazers' ineffective attack was evident while the midfield was disjointed.

"We have conceded defeat and this is no time for excuses. However, we will bounce back to our winning ways in our next match," Ataro said.

"We lost our usual spark today. The setback is a wake up call to the whole team. We need to get our rhythm back as soon as possible."

Elsewhere, Kenya Police came from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 with defending champions Butali Warriors.

Shamah Ademba gave Butali the lead in the 19th minute while Tristin Karis made it 2-0 in the 37th minute. Police then bounced back to life six minutes from time to pull a consolation.

Defender Samwel Oungo scored both goals from the penalty spot in the 54th and 59th minutes respectively.
