National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB) romped into the Super Cup semi-finals after beating Black Mamba 31-22 at Nyayo National Stadium yesterday.
NCPB led 16-10 at the break and hung on despite a Black Mamba surge to close the deficit in the second half. The national champions tactfully weathered the tide.
NCPB, who were 26-22 winners over KDF in their opener, topped Group A with maximum points from two wins.
Morgan Juma nailed six goals and Martin Nguli five. Black Mamba, who must now beat KDF next week to make the semis, had John Waita and Peter Odhiambo scoring four goals each.
"Everything worked well for me today. The tactics were spot on and we got the result we needed," said Danstun Eshikumo.
"But going into the semis, we will have to work on our wing plays. We missed a lot of chances and we will need to work on this as we wait to know who our opponents are," he said. Strathmore University also made the semis after dismissing GSU 28-15 in Pool B.
The students led 13-8 at the break but were on top with quick goals after intermission. Strathmore, who drew 21-21 with Kenyatta University the previous day, had six goals from Maxwell Mema and four each from Rashid Ingwela, Felix Omondi, and Nicholas Munya.
"We played better defensively than in our opening tie and this helped our offence. Had we not been wasteful, the scores would have been more," said Strath coach Peter Mwathi.
Women champions Nairobi Water Queens had seven goals from Cecilia Katheu, six from Brenda Ariviza, and five from Gladys Chilo as they thumped NCPB 32-19.
The winners, who whipped Nanyuki 37-17 in their opener were up 17-7 at halftime. NCPB had a game-high of eight goals from Sarah Manbonga.
In another women's game, Ulinzi Sharks blanked Nanyuki 30-17. The winners led 13-7 at the break and had Caren Letengaya shooting nine, Sharon Chelule six, and Sarah Wasike five.
Nanyuki, who have now lost two games had seven goals from Abigail Wambui while Betty Alungat notched another six.
