“We expect a huge field of athletes from Longonot Mountain Camp, Kisii, Nyamira, Mt Elgon, Nyahuhururu, Ngong, Nandi, Uasin Gishu, and Elgeyo Marakwet counties,” added Angwenyi.

The event will feature senior men and women's 10km events while junior men and women will take part in the 6km races, according to Angwenyi.

He added that senior athletes will pay a registration fee of Sh100 while junior athletes aged under 18 years will not pay anything.

Winners in each category will receive Sh50,000 with second-placed athletes getting Sh30,000. Third-placed athletes will get Sh20,000. Consolation prizes will be given to athletes who will finish between the fourth and 10th positions.

“This is a trial run and we expect to select a provisional team for the World Mountain and Trail Running Championship. The provisional team will train under the watchful eyes of coaches in various camps,” said Angwenyi.

The event was supposed to be held on November 28 but was moved to January 2 due to the change in the calendar for the World Mountain Running.

The Longonot Mountain Running race initially scheduled for January 2 has been postponed indefinitely.

The Meru Mountain Running race will be held on February 26 according to AK’s calendar.

The events are part of the preparations for the World Mountain Running and World Long Distance Mountain Running Championships to be held in Chiang Mai, Thailand in November 2022.
