Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology are hoping to retain the handball title at this year’s edition of the Kenya Universities Sports Federation (KUSF) Championships, starting this weekend at the Kibabii University in Bungoma.

The women's handball champions won the title during the 2019 edition in Eldoret.  The event, formerly Kenya Universities Sports Association (KUSA),  brings together universities from across the country.

MMUST head coach, Geoffrey Barasa, said they are well prepared to defend their title in the biennial championships despite stiff competition posed by their opponents.

He said they are aware the focus will be on them by virtue of being the champions hence they have taken preparations to another level.

Barasa, who won the men’s handball title with Kenyatta University (KU) two years ago, has put up spirited efforts in his new role at the Kakamega-based institution.

“As champions, we are more of an ‘enemy’ of each team and I am glad the players are willing to fight and defend the title,” he added.

He sang praises of his defence and striking force, saying he is not worried about defending his title.

“There are great teams that will be competing at the championships including the University of Eldoret, KU, and Kisii University among others,” he said.

“Winning back-to-back may not be easy but we are tactically fit and psyched up for the show,” he said.

MMUST will field teams in handball (both men and women), netball (men and women), soccer (women), and hockey (women) among others.
