Football Kenya Federation and Badminton Kenya will not participate in the National Olympic Committee of Kenya elections on December 9 following their suspension by Sports Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohamed and the Badminton World Federation respectively.

The returning officer for NOCK's electoral board, Joshua Okumbe, said they have decided not to clear the two bodies because of the storms surrounding them.

"In total, the NOCK register of members has 26 affiliates eligible to vote at the electoral congress. The sports registrar has provided clearance to 24 federations to participate in the elections. Two members, FKF and Badminton Kenya were not cleared to participate," Okumbe said.

Also locked out of the elections are Kenya Swimming Federation whereas Kenya Golf Union will participate after reaching an agreement with their rival body, Kenya Golf Federation.

"KGF is not an affiliate member of NOCK. To promote inclusivity and participation of all federations, it was decided that in areas of agreement between the two federations then the common position be adopted. Consequently, the nomination of a candidate by KGU to vie for any elective position in the executive board was adopted," Okumbe clarified.

Interestingly, one of those nominated for an elective post in the executive board is Winnie Kamau, Secretary-General of the troubled KSF who has been proposed by the Sports Dispute Tribunal SDT, which is not an affiliate of NOCK.

"It could be an oversight. Perhaps her nomination could have been done by SDT in collaboration with the Interim Management Committee which is the body that has been managing swimming activities in the country," NOCK acting secretary-general, Francis Mutuku said.

Consequently, Nairobi County Aquatic Federation secretary Kenneth Karani has been locked out on the grounds that he was proposed by a non-affiliate. " Karani was nominated by a branch of KSF, which is a contravention of the NOC-K constitution," said Mutuku.

Nevertheless, 26 candidates have been cleared to contest after presenting all the required documents including, nomination forms, code of conduct, tax compliance, EACC forms, HELB clearance, Credit Reference Bureau Clearance, and certificates of good conduct.

However, Kenya National Paralympics Committee President Agnes Oluoch will have to present her certificate of good conduct by December 7 if she is to stand any chance to compete.

Okumbe promised a free, fair, and credible election which will be conducted via the secret ballot.

"We are committed to delivering a transparent exercise. Integrity and credibility will be kept at the optimum and voting will be by secret ballot. On December 16, we will send a letter about the credibility of the elections to the Sports Registrar," Okumbe said.

He added: "A week later, the handing over of the new office bearers takes place and on December 30, the names will be sent to the Registrar of  Sports

. Any disputes must be channeled to the appeal tribunal on January 8 subject to payment of Sh200, 000."

Incumbent president Paul Tergat has already secured a second four-year term as there are no other contestants for the post.

Kenya Handball Federation chairman Francis Paul and Kenya Table Tennis Federation president Andrew Mudibo will face off for the secretary general's post alongside Mutuku.
