Kenya Defence Forces edged Technical University of Kenya 30-24 in the finals to claim the Western leg of the ‘Just Be Masters’ series title at Nyayo Stadium yesterday.
The rematch of the finals that was rained off on May 7 at Masinde Muliro University of Scieence and Technolgy in Kakamega started with both teams trending carefully to tie 5-5 after 10 minutes of play.
However, the soldiers soon broke away, taking an 11-7 advantage in the quarter-hour mark and cushioned themselves with a solid 18-10 lead at the breather. The first period was punctuated by several interceptions by both sides but it is Sammy Mwangangi’s troops who punished TUK the most for their miscalculated passes.
After the break, the varsity side, tutored by Chris Ojwange, regrouped but their new approach to the game did not pay much as they only reduced the parity by two goals scoring 14 against KDF’s 12.
There were no double digits posted in the game where KDF’s Junior Kipng’etich notched in eight and his efforts were complimented by Philip Isutsa (six) and Slava Amimo (five). On their losing endeavour, Timothy Kariuki and Michael Indasi both netted six for TUK.
The two teams now await winners of the Mombasa (June) and Nairobi (July) legs of the Brian Mathew Oduor-sponsored for the national showpiece in September.
