Floorball Federation of Kenya (FFK) will send two teams (men and women) to the forthcoming East Africa Floorball tournament set for September 23-24 in Kampala Uganda.
The sport which is new in Kenya is a type of floor hockey that features six players, one being a goalkeeper and is played in three twenty-minutes period.
FFK communications director Gillian Nyaboke confirmed the sport was recently accredited by the International Floorball Federation (IFF) to run in Kenya.
Nyaboke said they have reached out to various universities across the nation and many have shown interest and with time the sport will gather ground.
“We are organising a street floorball event that will help us select national teams - men and women - to represent the country at the East African event that will see Somali, Kenya and hosts Uganda compete for the title, alongside guests Mozambique whom the East African countries have extended an olive branch to by virtue of being one of the 66 active members of the IFF,” noted Nyaboke.
He added that the federation will hold a three day coaching and officiating course between April 27 and 29 at the University of Nairobi which will be conducted by IFF acclaimed coach Petteri Bergius from Finland.
Among the universities which have embraced the sport include Kenyatta University ‘Aceknight’, UON, Mt Kenya University, Rift Valley Institute of Technology and Technical University of Kenya.
