New women’s national team coach looking forward to top assignment

Green Sharks and Sliders hockey team’s tactician Nixon Nyaganga has received his appointment as the head coach of the women’s national team with open hands ahead of the International Hockey Federation World League 1 in Accra, Ghana next month.

Nyaganga, who will work together with Rose Achieng and Wilson Otieno, takes over from Orange Telkom

clubs head coach Jos Openda.

Nyaganga had a good season last year, guiding Sliders to second in the Kenya Hockey Union women’s national league behind champions Telkom Orange.

Nyaganga, a certified FIH coach, said he was aware of what was at stake but was quick to note he has always wished and longed for the opportunity to coach the national team and therefore he will give the stint his best shot.

“I have been in this discipline for a very long time as a coach for both

Green Sharks and Sliders but I have not coached

the national team. And therefore I am happy and glad the KHU management has given

me the chance. I take it with open hands,” Nyaganga.

added,

“I am aware I’m coming in at a time when the women’s side is doing well in Africa. I intend to extend the good performance,”

The national team emerged

top during the World League 1

2014 edition in Nairobi and qualified for the second round which was held in Monterey, California, USA.

The tactician who was speaking at the City Park Stadium after guiding the team through a morning training session said he was happy with the player turn out in training.

“We have 33 players in training. This

is a good number and in a way, an

early sign of competition for places in gthe squad which will later be trimmed down to 23 players. Currently we

are running through the basics and with three weeks at our disposal we hope to be ready when the time comes,” said the tacictian.
