United Democratic Party leader Cyrus Jirongo has  been cleared to contest the Kakamega governorship.

He declared that he has no competitor. Although other candidates started their campaigns early,  he only needs 30 days to campaign and win the seat, he said.

“It’s a walk in the park. You don’t need to campaign for four years in an area you understand the terrain and where you are going,” Jirongo told reporters after the procedure.

He joined the Kakamega race because he wants to offer what he described as "true leadership".

He said lack of leadership is one of the challenges that have dogged the people of Busia, Bungoma, Kakamega and Vihiga counties and dragged down development.

“If there is a painful thing the people of Mulembe nation are going through, it is lack of true leadership. If you’re looking for employment,  Kakamega is the wrong place to go to," Jirongo said.

"We have come here to offer leadership and not for employment. I think I have enough that I can do than campaigning to become governor, but because of the desperation and what’s going on here,  we’ve basically become voting machines and a laughing stock," he said.

Jirongo and his running mate Jos Konzolo were cleared on Saturday by Kakamega IEBC returning officer Joseph Ayatta to join the race to succeed Governor Wycliffe Oparanya.

Jirongo will face Fernandez Barasa of ODM,   ANC's Cleophas Malala,  Samuel Omukoko (MDP),  Suleiman Sumba (Kanu),  lawyer Michael Osundwa (independent) and Austine Otieno (independent).

He said he will prioritise issues affecting the youth adding,  “no leader whether MCA or MP will be safe unless the youths are taken care of. It is that we work together on this issue or we all go down together".

Jirongo called on politicians to conduct peaceful campaigns.

He said that Azimio flag bearer Raila Odinga and his running mate Martha Karua must give priority to challenges facing youths if they want to lead the country.

He said Azimio was headed for victory in Western Kenya.
