Four medics died in a road accident at Flyover trading centre on the Nairobi-Nakuru highway on Sunday.

Several others were seriously injured in the crash involving a lorry and a van ferrying a group of medics. The health workers were heading to Engineer town in Kinangop for a medical camp.

Witness Peter Karani said the lorry heading to Nairobi from Naivasha veered off its lane and hit the van.

Karani said the van was about to leave the highway and join the Magumu-Njabini road when the accident occurred.

Nyandarua South police boss Francis Mwangi said the injured were rushed to Kijabe Mission Hospital.

Mwangi said initial investigations showed the lorry driver, who was also injured, was to blame for the accident.

“We had an accident on Sunday. The driver of the lorry lost control of the vehicle and hit a van carrying 15 medics, killing four on the spot,” he said.

The bodies were taken to Naivasha hospital mortuary.

Meanwhile, a man was crushed to death by a boulder while working in a quarry in Mai Mahiu, Naivasha.

He was pronounced dead on arrival at a local health centre in the town. Operations in the quarry have been suspended suspended.

This is the second case in a month to be reported in the quarry located a few kilometres from Mai Mahiu town.

Naivasha police boss Samuel Waweru said the body has been retrieved.

“The investigating officers have opened an inquiry file following the accident and we have encouraged those quarry workers to observe safety measures in the future,” he said.
