Independent presidential aspirants who on Wednesday submitted their papers to the IEBC are optimistic they will be cleared.

The commission will next week start a marathon sifting through the thousands of documents to confirm if the signatures and copies of identity cards presented by the aspirants are valid.

The process will confirm whether the papers presented and the signatures match the names of the supporters presented.

The agency will also establish if the aspirants submitted adequate copies of the IDs since a shortfall will automatically lead to elimination.

Out of the 38, only 11 beat the deadline for signatures and 48,000 copies of IDs from their supporters from at least 24 counties.

The 11 include Reuben Kigame, James Kamau, Gibson Ng'ang'a, Dorothy Kemunto and Peter Mumbiko.

Others are Dancan Oduor, Erastus Masira, Jeremia Nyaga, Faith Ngige and Muthiora Kariara and June Nyakwar.

Deputy president William Ruto (UDA), Raila Odinga (Azimio la Umoja), Kalonzo Musyoka (Wiper) and Maina Wanjigi (Safina) and Roots Party flagbearer George Wajackoyah have also submitted their papers.

Njeru Kathangu (Ford Asili), Justus Juma (JFPK) and Mwangi wa Iria (Usawa Kwa Wote) are reported to have presented their documents on Wednesday.

Other requirements which the aspirants were expected to submit by Wednesday are dully filled Form 12, self-declaration form and Sh200,000 nomination fee.

Women and Persons with Disabilities were required to pay Sh100,000.

A spirited fight over some of the rules by a group of independent hopefuls who were present during the pre-nomination meeting at Bomas of Kenya on Monday fell on deaf ears, with IEBC chairperson Wafula Chebukati insisting they were following the law.

“As a commission, we are following the law and we have no reason to depart from the provision,” Chebukati, the national returning officer, said during the meeting.

Stephen Owoko, who is the chairperson of the independent aspirants, said he failed to deliver the requirements by the lapse of the window period.

Exuding confidence that his members are going to be cleared, Owoko said, “some presented what they had managed to collect by 5pm and they have until Sunday to submit the remaining documents.”

Kigame told the Star, “I have availed all the ID copies which are required and I am hoping for the best.”
