For a long time we have witnessed students commit suicide, be it in the universities or even in villages. The assumption that once a child turns 18 s/he should have total freedom is messing up children. Without intervention, future generations will be at great risk.

Most parents stop being friends to their children once they become teenagers, leaving them confused. They end up seeking refuge on social media while some join bad company.

The youth are going through so much yet not even their close relatives notice and come to their aid. In a country where graduates cannot get jobs as soon as they complete their studies, it is heartbreaking for people to assume that they are okay.

Once one completes their studies, parents/guardians are then on their neck pressuring them to look for jobs and be useful. Failing which these youths are left devastated. Depression is real and it is taking away young lives.

Parents and guardians, kindly give your children a listening ear. Don’t be too strict to a point your child cannot confide in you. Don’t be too busy fending for your children, whom you have no personal relationship with , it will all be in vain.

Don’t be too blind not to notice when your children are troubled. Set aside one day of the week and give them a chance to share with you their dreams, achievements , mistakes, friends, likes and dislikes. Learn not to be a judge when they confide in you but be an advisor.

The government should roll out more programmes to benefit the youths; our education system should also reinforce guidance and counselling services, especially in secondary schools, colleges and universities.
