Dear H.E. Dr. William Samoei Ruto, CGH. President of the Republic of Kenya and Commander-In-Chief of the Kenya Defence Forces

Your Excellency, in your solemn mandate, you have the primary responsibility to cater for, protect and advance the basic human rights of all citizens of Kenya, within the country and outside the Kenyan borders.

About 2 million marginalized groups of women within and without the Kenyan Borders who are working as Domestic Workers, continue to face various forms of gender-based violence and abuse in the line of duty.

In extreme cases - which happens more often than not, women are killed.

We acknowledge the amendments that advocacy and lobbying have yielded in salaries and remuneration, but the significant absence of policy guidelines to protect the sexual health and reproductive rights of laborers in the informal sector further exposes these groups of people already faced with major vulnerabilities, to greater risk.

Your Excellency, the domestic workers taskforce in Kenya comprises all persons employed or engaged as subordinates and professionals in Private Homes, Houses, Flats, Apartments, Clubs, Guest Houses, Bakeries, Sweets and Biscuit making factories, Children's Homes, Rehabilitation Centers, Homes for the Aged, Villas, Hospices, and all Non-Governmental Organizations (NGO) projects associated with providing cleaning, Security and Social Services to the Community.

This is a big enough population that deserves your protection in policy and law. Youth Alive! Kenya, therefore, asks you to:

  • Ratify the International Labour Organisation Convention number 189 (ILO C189).
  • Create favorable policies and laws to protect the Sexual Health and Reproductive rights of Domestic Workers in Kenya.
  • Champion the inclusion of this population in key decisions that directly affect their wellbeing.

Thank you Sir!

Truly

Mitchelle Atieno,
