Interior PS Raymond Omollo has called on Kenyans to exercise caution as heavy rains continue to pound the country.

Speaking in Bungoma on Thursday, Omollo called on Kenyans to avoid crossing flooded rivers and roads for their safety.

The PS further reaffirmed the government's commitment to support families affected by floods.

"I want to take this opportunity to call on all Kenyans that we are experiencing rains at levels that we haven't done so in many years," PS Omollo said.

"We urge the public to remain cautious and also to listen to the directives or the guidance that we have already given in terms of when we are crossing the rivers, the bridges and the roads."

The PS also called on those in leadership positions such as teachers, police officers and elected leaders to support the public at this time to prevent the loss of lives under circumstances that could be avoidable.

"In instances where we have accidents we have the disaster operations centre which is operational and we continue to give advisory and give support in the food and non-food items," he said.

On Thursday morning, the Interior Ministry said at least 188 people have lost their lives due to ongoing heavy rains in the country.

It said nine fatalities have been reported in the last 24 hours.

So far, 90 people are registered as missing while 125 people have been reported injured.

The number of displaced households is 33,100, affecting approximately 165,500 people.

In total, at least 196,296 people have been impacted by the heavy rains.

Further, Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki said 1,967 schools have been affected by the floods.

He said the emergency response teams from Narok alongside the County Security team and Red Cross successfully evacuated 90 individuals in coordinated efforts by ground and aerial units in the Masai Mara.

At the Mara, 19 lodges were flooded after River Talek overflowed.

The CS said there were no fatalities reported, adding that a tracing desk has been set up at the Masai Mara Sekenani Gate.
