Several feared trapped as five-storey Nyamira building collapses

Several people are feared trapped in a five-storey building that collapsed at Gesima in Nyamira.

The number of people trapped in the building was unknown by the time of going to press.

According to the Kenya Red Cross, search and rescue efforts are currently underway.

According to eyewitnesses at the scene, the building was under construction and it is suspected that several other people are trapped in the building.

"We had a bang and suspected it was an accident due to the busy road nearby but we realized it is a building that had come down after the dust had settled," said Richard Omesa who is a trader at the Market.

Those rescued were rushed to Nyamira County Referral Hospital for treatment as rescue operations continue.

The County government of Nyamira through the Department of Health, Kenya Red Cross and the Disaster Management team are leading the reacue operations.

The building collapsed just a few days after strong winds blew away the roof of a four-storey Nyakemincha Secondary School in Nyamira following the ongoing heavy downpour.
