Kenyatta University Vice Chancellor Paul Wainaina has called for vigilance after reports of conmen preying on families who lost their loved ones in last week's road crash.

Wainaina on Sunday warned that the said conmen were targeting the mourning families claiming they were from various government agencies.

According to the VC, the conmen were then collecting personal information from the families with a promise of processing their compensation.

"There are heartless individuals who are going round claiming to represent the government agencies, these individuals are aggressively seeking your details promising to help you process the compensation," Wainaina said.

"Do not fall prey to their treachery. In the wake of this tragedy, the university will follow all the processes laid out by the law and keep you well informed."

He called on the families to stay focused on dealing with the aftermath of the tragedy for now and avoid falling prey to the conmen.

The memorial service was held at the Kenyatta University Graduation Square Grounds on Sunday.

This comes even as the university asked for financial support following a grisly road accident that claimed the lives of 11 students.

The students were among a group of 58 who were heading to Mombasa for an academic trip when one of their school buses collided with a trailer at Maungu in Voi.

The university said it is raising funds to offset medical bills and funeral services among other expenses.

The bodies were transported to Kenyatta University Hospital Morgue where they are preserved awaiting burial processes.

Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu described the road accident as devastating not only to the higher institution but to the education community at large.

President William Ruto donated Sh2 million to help in the send-off of the students.

Ruto's donation was given on Sunday by First Lady Mama Rachel Ruto when she attended the memorial service.

"I would like to present a contribution and donation of Sh2 million from our President William Ruto to support the families and the entire work as we prepare to send off our children," she said.

Mama Rachel said as an alumnus of KU, she was saddened by the loss of the 11 students.
