At least two Eritreans lost their lives and several others sustained injuries on Saturday night in a road accident at Sayatu area on the Nakuru-Eldoret highway.

The 12 injured foreigners are currently receiving treatment for serious injuries at Nakuru Level Five Hospital, according to the police.

The accident involved an 11-seater matatu owned by Eldoret Shuttles, which was transporting passengers of Eritrean nationality from Nakuru to Eldoret.

The matatu collided with a stationary truck parked beside the road.

Police said the truck had developed mechanical issues and was left unattended on the road without any warning signs.

The matatu was carrying 14 Eritreans at the time of the incident.

Two died at the scene of the accident while the survivors were all rushed to Nakuru County Hospital.

However, their names could not be established immediately due to the language barrier.

The bodies of the individuals who passed away in the incident at 9:40 pm on Saturday were transported to the Nakuru County morgue, awaiting identification and postmortem examination.

Police mentioned encountering challenges in communicating with the survivors due to language differences.

Efforts to secure a translator were underway on Sunday.

Authorities expressed their intention to ascertain the origin and destination of the group involved in the accident.

“We suspect like many others, they were being smuggled,” said an officer handling the matter.
