The late Namibia President Hage Geingob was a soccer lover based on his final tweet.

In many of his photos, Geingob was seen relishing moments with local teams on various occasions.

There were instances where he showcased his football skills, notably at an event in Namibia's capital, Windhoek.

His passion for football was further evident in his last tweet on X, where he cheered on the national team against Mali during the game.

In a tweet on Wednesday evening, January 24, Geingob acknowledged the tough challenge ahead for the team but urged them to give their best efforts to secure a victory.

"To the Brave Warriors - in your final match in a difficult group this evening, play with courage and pride," he said.

"I wish you all the best in your battle against Mali. Show them that you are warriors!," he added.

During the match, Namibia managed to get a draw against Mali to progress to the knockout phase of the Africa Cup of Nations 2023. 

According to Super Sport, there were scenes of jubilation at Stade de San Pedro as Namibia progressed to the Round of 16 for the first time in their history.

This was after their 0-0 draw with Mali on that Wednesday.

Namibia was however knocked out of the 2023 AFCON after facing a defeat against Angola in the Round of 16 on January 27.

Geingob who was aged 82, passed away on Sunday at Lady Pohamba Hospital. 

The Head of State who had been battling cancer succumbed at around 12: 04 am surrounded by his wife, Madame Monica Geingos and children.

South Africa President Cyril Ramaphosa has remembered Gengob as an outstanding leader, patriot and friend of South Africa.

President William Ruto has expressed his condolences on the passing of Namibia President Hage Geingob.

In a statement on Sunday, Ruto eulogised Geingob as a  dedicated leader who was focused on serving his people.

"I extend my deepest condolences and sympathy to the family and the people of Namibia following the death of President Hage Geingob," he said.

The Head of State further described the late President as a believer of a unified Africa, who strongly promoted the continent’s voice and visibility in the global arena.
