President William Ruto has maintained that going to the street protest by some Kenyans and lobbyists will not solve the problems affecting Kenyans.

Speaking when he launched the affordable housing programme in Bondeni in Nakuru County on Saturday, Ruto said it was time to come together as Kenyans and change the country for the better.

Ruto said the cost of living can only be brought down by supporting farmers to generate enough food.

“We don’t have time; our country has been held hostage for a long time by vested interests, incompetence, and corruption. We must for the first time, change our country together,” Ruto said.

He said his plan to provide subsidised fertiliser to farmers has seen them generate more produce, adding that he has already put in place measures to ensure they receive the same support this year.

“Kuna watu wanamangamanga barabarani na sufuri kwa kichwa, na maandamano ati wanataka kupunguza bei ya unga, bei ya unga itapungua namna gani ukiweka sufuria kwa kichwa, si lazima turudi shambani tuzalishe chakula ndio bei ya unga iteremke wale watu wa sufuria waambie waache ujinga,” the President said.

This comes barely a day after opposition leader Raila Odinga said he would give directions to his supporters next week in regards to the high cost of living.

Speaking in Rongo, Migori County, on Friday, Raila said he would be releasing a comprehensive statement regarding the matter.

"We will release the statement indicating what position we will take and where we should stand as a people," he said.

In December, Raila dismissed claims that the opposition had slept on its job.

Raila said the opposition has been at the forefront of speaking out on the various issues that have affected the country.

Raila further emphasized that, as the opposition, their primary role is to highlight the shortcomings in the government.
