A 50-year-old loader was crushed to death by a forklift he was operating at the Mombasa port.

Police said Omar Jiha was loading loose cargo containing sodium sulfate and in packed bales when the forklift lost control and tipped on him.

The machine landed on his right-hand side killing him on the spot.

Police visited the scene as part of the investigations into the tragedy.

The body was moved to the Pandya Hospital mortuary awaiting postmortem.

The forklift was detained at the station yard pending inspection, police said.

Meanwhile, a mason was seriously injured after he fell off the third floor of a building under construction in the Pangani area, Nairobi.

The victim was at the site of a building under construction when he slipped and fell to the ground floor.

Police said he sustained fractured limbs, head injuries and had internal bleeding.

The victim was admitted to the hospital in serious condition.

This is the latest such accident at construction sites in a series that have been reported to police.

Police with county government officials and those from the National Construction Authority are investigating the tragedy.

The officials say preliminary findings show most workers at such sites lack protection gear.

Poor enforcement of laws has been blamed for the trend.

Dozens of workers die in such incidents annually while others are nursing wounds.
