Witnesses rushed to their rescue and took them to hospital where the boy died while undergoing treatment.

Police were called to the scene and declared they had opened an investigation into the incident and that they would seek an explanation from the owner of the septic tank.

Witnesses said the tank was almost full of waste at the time of the tragedy.

The injured boy was still in hospital on Monday, police said.

The body of the boy was moved to the mortuary for autopsy and further processing.

Elsewhere in Emali, Makueni, the body of a man was found lying along the Mombasa-Nairobi highway near the Pipeline station.

Police said the body of an unknown male adult aged about 40 had no visible injuries at the time it was discovered.
