Investments, Trade and Industry Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria has announced that Kenyans will get employment opportunities from a USA-based firm.

Kuria on Tuesday said 600 Kenyans will get opportunities in the US-based firm in the course of this week.

This is after he met Samasource Chief Executive Officer Wendy Gonzelez who said the firm is looking to hire 600 Kenyans and more.

Samasource is a training-data company that focuses on interpreting data for artificial intelligence algorithms based in California, USA.

"Wendy Gonzelez, CEO at World leading BPO giant Samasource has just informed me that following the recent government efforts to create 1 million BPO jobs in Kenya, they will this week hire 600 Kenyans," Kuria said.

"They will also hire another 1,500 in the next two weeks to work on Computer Vision AI. I have assured Wendy that they have made the right decision," Kuria said.

Business Process Outsourcing Association of Kenya chairperson Roselyn Maundu while speaking on the sidelines of the Executive Roundtable for BPO leaders in May, said BPO will create more than a million jobs in the next five years which will give Kenyans dignified employment.

“We need to promote freelancing for Kenya, and BPOs are a solution to see the success of this. With good governance and an enabling environment for BPO, more jobs can be generated as the BPO industry grows, resulting in improved quality of life,” Maundu said.

Every year, close to one million graduates enter the job market causing a surge in unemployment.

This surge has left the government embarking on initiatives and programmes that encourage self-employment.

Among them was creating an outsourcing hub for foreign companies to get employees from Kenya.
