Raila in Vihiga for former COTU chairman Mwondi's burial

Mwondi served as Cotu-K’s chairman-general for over two decades.

Azimio Chief Raila Odinga is in Vihiga county for the burial of former Central Organisation of Trade Unions chairman Rajab Mwondi.

Raila arrived the burial on Saturday in the company of ODM Deputy party leader Wycliffe Oparanya among others. 

Cotu Secretary General Francis Atwoli was also present. 

The former Cotu chairman died on Wednesday, August 23 while undergoing treatment at Aga Khan Hospital in Kisumu.

Atwoli described Mwondi as a brother, leader and true friend who mentored him to be better when he got wind of his death. 

“Bro. Mwondi was not just a brother or a leader, he was a true friend, a mentor, and a guiding light throughout my journey in the labour movement.” Atwoli said.

During Rajabu’s tenure at the helm of Cotu-k from 1986, Mwondi tirelessly advocated for fair wages, safe working conditions and the overall well-being of Kenyan workers.

Mwondi served as Cotu-K’s chairman-general for over two decades and doubled up as a General-secretary of the Printing, Publishing Paper Manufacturers and Allied Workers Union (KUPRIPUPA).

“He served the organization with utmost trust, dedication and commitment. He was no doubt the greatest pillar in the country’s labor movement …. his legacy will forever remain a beacon inspiration and dedication to the cause of workers’ rights and welfare,” Atwoli said while announcing Rajab’s death on Wednesday last week.
