Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has given assurance that the Kenya Kwanza government will bring the construction of the Yatta dam to completion.
Gachagua spoke in Machakos county during the burial ceremony of Mwala MP Vincent Musyoka's mother.
He said the Yatta dam project will solve the problem of lack of water for the area residents.
"Mambo ya maji tuko na Yatta dam which is located in Machakos and hio maji itajazwa hapo itakuja kusaidia ukambani. Kwa hivo tuko sawasawa," Gachagua said.
(The issue of water will be solved by the Yatta dam which is located in Machakos and the water will be filled in the dam to help the residents.)
Machakos Governor Wavinya Ndeti said the county government has been working in collaboration with the national government to bring development to the region, especially in terms of roads and water.
"I want to say thank you to the President. We have been working in collaboration and we have been working very well in terms of roads and water," Ndeti said.
She said many are not aware of the national government's input in developing infrastructure in the area in terms of roads, water and more projects.
Ndeti said with time, the area residents will be able to see the end product of the collaboration between the county and national governments.
The Yatta Dam project commenced in August 2014 and was to be completed in eight months.
The project was intended to construct a dam on Thika River near Kithimani town, upgrade Yatta canal, supply water to several towns in Yatta sub-county including Kithimani, Matuu, Katangi and other trading centers as well as provide sanitation for the towns of Matuu and Kithimani.
It was estimated to serve an average of 150,000 people and had a budget of over Sh2 billion.
The project stalled nine years ago after a landowner moved to court and blocked its progress.
The residents argued that they owned the land on which the project was to be constructed along Thika River in Yatta, Machakos county.
However, in 2021, the land ownership cases pending in court were resolved and the government declared that the construction of the dam would start.
