Security officers in Mandera have foiled an attempted raid by suspected al Shabaab militants at a police camp in the area.

The attack targeted at Elram camp manned by officers from the Anti-stock theft unit (ASTU), police say, lasted for 10 minutes.

In a report, the militants fired explosives at the camp in the Friday evening incident prompting officers to respond.

There were, however, no casualties reported in the incident with officers now pursuing the attackers said to have fled to the eastern part of the camp.

“The attack was well repulsed, the explosives that were fired by the militias-one rocket propelled grenades (RPGs) landed inside the camp and the other outside causing a fire inside and outside the camp,” reads the report.

The attack at the camp comes at a time security agencies have ramped up their war against the militants operating near the main border.

A month ago Special Forces deployed to the area killed 20 militants following a clash.

The terrorists had ambushed the Special Operations Group (SOG) team at Ogorwen Location within Mandera prompting an exchange of fire.

“Preliminary investigations indicate that the resulting heavy gunfire exchange between the Officers who were on patrol, and the militants, left twenty militants fatally injured and eight National Police Service Officers injured. Police also recovered assorted weapons from the scene of the crime,” Police spokesperson Resla Onyango said.

A submachine gun and an RPG were among the items recovered at the scene.
