Plans underway as State meets target ahead of Climate Summit - Tuya

Summit will be held at the Kenyatta International Conference Centre.

Environment, Climate Change and Forestry Cabinet Secretary Soipan Tuya has said the State has surpassed its target of approximately 10,000 delegates ahead of the Africa Climate Summit set for September.

In a press briefing on Thursday, she said from the registration of the participants it is clear they have surpassed their target.

"We expected to host approximately 10,000 delegates but as of this morning, we registered over 9,500 locally and internationally. The strong interest in the Summit shows that indeed the world is attached to the climate change crisis,’’ she said.

The Director of Climate change Pacifica Achieng on the other hand said they have confirmed the venue of the summit which will be Kenyatta International Conference Centre.

Achieng said they have invited all African heads of state, heads of United Nations Agencies, investors, private sector participants, civil societies and even the youth.

"We cannot achieve the global goal of reducing the emissions if we don’t acknowledge the contribution of everybody, whether small countries or middle income countries," she said.

She said there will be investment commitments as they will have a private sector participation where we will be showcasing multi-billion dollar worth investments across the continent.

The climate change director said the summit will have a youth event, private sector as well as women event.

"We have high level side events, presidential administerial segments, African climate week side event, exhibitions and private rooms where potential deals will get to be signed," Achieng said.

She said on September 3 the pre-summit event will take place followed by a high level opening of the ministerial segment on September 4.

The high-level opening for the Heads of State will begin from 9 am and the summit will end on the third day at around 2pm.

"The side events during the summit have received 550 requests and are being processed whereby they will be finalised by next week," she said.

She added that exhibition spaces will also be opened next week. 

Achieng further noted that security team from interior is ready with their detailed security plans.

She however said the information is confidential saying that the security will start from the airport to the hotel where the dignitaries will stay.

"We have vetted all the available hotels in Nairobi and it will be posted in the website. Eight African heads of state have confirmed as well as VVIP," she said.
