Migori senator Eddy Oketch has stated that Kenyans will not relent in holding peaceful and non-violent demonstrations until the government heeds their calls.

In a statement, Oketch said ordinary Kenyans have resolved to mobilise themselves through all constitutional means without fear to agitate for their rights.

He said President William Ruto’s government has not been listening to the plight of Kenyans who gave them the power and “will be punished by the exercise of that power directly by the people.”

The Senator noted that last Wednesday’s demos were largely peaceful until police decided to attack unarmed civilians, leading to violence, looting and destruction of some private and public property.

“The people will not relent on peaceful and non-violent demonstrations until they save our nation from mismanagement of public resources and disregard of the rule of law by the executive,” Oketch stated.

Going further, the Senator claimed that the government’s use of excessive force through law enforcement agencies led to violence and destruction.

“It is indeed unfortunate that security agencies are now at the mercy of a small group of powerful state officers and top current politicians whose association with corruption and lack of respect for the rule of law is legendary,” he added.

Azimio la Umoja Coalition has announced three days of protests from Wednesday to Friday next week.

The coalition which had planned to hold the anti-government demos only on Wednesday, said it was forced to make the changes in response to what it described as overwhelming requests from Kenyans.

However, President William Ruto on Friday said that further opposition protests against his government would not be permitted, warning Azimio leader Raila Odinga against taking his grievances to the street from Wednesday.
