Interior Cabinet Secretary Kindiki Kithure has assured licensed alcohol traders that the government will not interfere with their businesses in the ongoing crackdown against illicit brews.

Kindiki said traders selling licensed products need not to fear as they will not be affected by the operation.

“We are not against licensed traders in the alcohol business. Traders who are licensed and are selling products that have been given a clean bill of health by KRA, the anti-counterfeit agency and KEBS have nothing to fear,” said Kindiki.

Speaking during a meeting in Nakuru Tuesday, the CS also used the opportunity to warn police officers involved in the operation against harassing those doing legitimate business.

He said they have so far received reports of some officers taking advantage of the situation to harass or intimidate the traders.

“I know we have had another discussion on the number of licenses to be issued but that is a different discussion,” he noted.

The convention brought together leaders, administrators, security officers, and residents from Rift Valley to firm up our approach in the region.

Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua who is leading a strong campaign against the illicit brews and drug abuse convened the meeting.

The CS at the same time reminded security teams and local administrators of their role in the fight against the vice in their regions noting anyone who attempts to abet it will be dealt with at an individual level.

According to Kindiki, the government was committed to totally ending any sale and use of illicit and toxic alcoholic drinks as well as narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances in the country as it had continued to wreck families and ruin the lives of the youth.

“Any officer who veers away from the very deliberate and focused efforts of bringing this country from dangerous substances and drugs will be on their own and we will take action without any further reference,” he warned.
