State moves to rally youth ahead of Climate change summit

Ministry of Environment, Climate Change & Forestry officials on Wednesday met with youths drawn from environment and climate change spaces around the country.  

The meeting chaired by officials from the Environment Ministry, aimed at drafting a plan for the proposed Africa Climate Summit Youth Assembly, a precursor of the Africa Climate Action Summit set for September 4.  

The meeting further aimed at developing a joint engagement strategy between the youth and the ministry.

According to the Ministry, the joint strategy is expected to amplify the collective voice of young people in Kenya and the African continent to drive meaningful change. 

The young environmentalists present agreed to establish sector working groups on various thematic areas aligned with the pillars of the upcoming Africa Climate Action Summit.

The meeting ensured the ministry’s commitment to long-term continuous engagement between the two entities.  

Some of the youth in attendance were Environment activist Anita Soina, Wangari Mathai Foundation Head of Campaigns Ms. Elizabeth Wathuti, and Africa Special Programmes Lead at High-Level Climate Champions Jabri Ibrahim.  

The Africa Climate Summit Youth Assembly is set for September 1 and 2   in Nairobi.
