The National Environment Management Authority has shut down four abattoirs for non-compliance.

Bungoma has four abattoirs situated in Kimilili, Bungoma town, Sirisia and Webuye.

Western region Nema director Anthony Aura said that the main aim of the crackdown is to check on the compliance of the facilities.

He said in Bungoma they shut down four slaughterhouses that have not complied with the authority’s regulations.

“We have decided to carry out a joint crackdown in Bungoma and Busia to cover a vast area and ensure that institutions and organizations operating under our regime comply,” he said.

However, he said, out of the four slaughterhouses owned by the Bungoma county government, none has complied with Nema’s regulations.

“We are very disappointed at how the facility is being run,” he said.

Speaking to the Star on the phone, Bungoma town slaughterhouse manager Wasike Wanga confirmed that the slaughterhouse was shut down.

He said currently, the county government has taken up the matter and it's doing its best to ensure that the facility complies with Nema's requirements.

The authority director called on the Bungoma county government to ensure that the facilities comply with the authority’s regulations.

“The authority will be very tough on these facilities until they comply and follow our regulations,” he said.

Aura warned traders who are still using plastic bags stating that if found an action will be taken against them.

Bungoma County Nema director Vincent Mahiva told the Star that the crackdown will proceed in the Western region counties to ensure that all facilities comply with the authority's requirement.
