The government should give teachers at least 42 per cent salary increase, Kuppet vice chairman Ronald Tonui has said.

Tonui said teachers have been subjected to a lot of deductions and they last got a salary increase in 2016.

"In the past seven years teachers have faced inflation averaging at around 8 per cent every year, totaling to an inflation rate of 42 per cent," Tonui said.

Tonui said that in 2021 there was a change in policy and the introduction of the Public Service Superannuation scheme reduced the usual pension from 31 to 15 per cent.

"We need to ensure that the teachers are given a salary increase of at least 42 per cent. If they're given that minimum, then we can engage in any other deductions," Tonui said.
